On July 1 2006, YAS or the Yorkshire Ambulance Service was created when Tees, East and North Yorkshire (TENYAS), South Yorkshire Ambulance Service (SYAS) and the West Yorkshire Metropolitan Ambulance Service (WYMAS) joined together.
TENYAS was established on April 1 1991 due to the union of former Cleveland, Humberside and North Yorkshire services. It responds to the medical needs of Middlesbrough, York and Hull and the rural areas of Yorkshire Dales, Wolds.
SYAS, or was former called South Yorkshire Metropolitan Ambulance Service was created in 1974. Although on April 1, 1992 it became an NHS trust and it gives its services to the city of Sheffiled and the districts of Barnsley, Doncaster, and Rotherham.
WYMAS was also created in 1974 and became an NHS Trust in 1922. It covers the new metropolitan county of West Yorkshire and the Craven District of North Yorkshire.
Today, YAS is the medical aid of East Riding of Yorkshire, which includes Kingston Upon Hill, the South Yorkshire and the West Yorkshire together with the majority of the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire.
Its system operates the same with all the ambulance services in UK wherein it does not charge its patients directly since its funding is received from the general tax. So not only the residents of Yorkshire, but all UK citizens, can enjoy freely the services given by the Service.
The Service owns 2 communication centers which control the responses. 1 of which is based at the headquarters at Wakefield 41 Business Park- M1 Motorway Junction 41, North West of Wakefield. And this control room is tasked to cover West Yorkshire and South Yorkshire. While the other control room is based in Skelton on the outskirts of York, which includes East and North Yorkshire. The Service operates based on 2 cores which are Accident and Emergency Care (A&E) and Patient Transport Services (PTS).
Currently, the Services is still on its way of progressing to meet the time targets. Over the past years though, it has been labeled as England’s Worst, failing to meet the standard response time. However, due to some criticisms, it is satisfying to know that the Service has been trying to improve its quality service provided to the people.
