The department is CPA accredited and an approved training laboratory with the Health Professions Council and the Royal College of Pathologists and participates fully in external quality assurance schemes for the full repertoire.

Main Duties are:

  • To organise the day to day operation of  the product handling team.
  • Provide specialist advice support staff and other Healthcare workers.
  • To maintain compliance with good laboratory practice in accordance with the current standards of Clinical Pathology Accreditation (UK), ISO 15189:2003.
  • To maintain compliance with current versions of European, National and Local Legislation, Standards and Recommendations for Transfusion Practice.
  • To ensure the efficient use of consumables and staff resources within the team and take corrective action in consultation with the TPM.
  • To ensure that reports are ready within the agreed turnaround time and alert the TPM of  any non compliances in verbal, electronic or hardcopy processes.
  • On a daily basis communicate patient information that is of a sensitive, highly complex and technical nature.
  • Ensure that training logbooks and personal competency portfolio’s are kept up to date and signed off on a regular basis as training, competence and proficiency is achieved.
  • Assist the TPM to maintain central training and competency databases.
  • Undertake and establish evidence of continuing professional development and proficiency in order to maintain mandatory HPC registration which will be formally reviewed at Personal Review and Development meetings (PDRS).
  • To perform root cause analysis in the investigation of incidents and complaints and report findings and outcomes to the TPM who will decide on the requirement to report to SHOT and/or SABRE.
  • In the event of a transfusion reaction, review electronic patient  haematological data in the light of the patient’s condition in order to inform the TPM and Transfusion Clinician who may then order relevant follow-up procedures.
  • To be fully aware of the dangerous pathogens advisory groups classification of pathogens, the rules and regulations for containment and the safe handling of high risk samples, e.g. salmonella typhi, lassa fever, viral haemorrhagic fever
  • To ensure staff within the sub-section adhere to local and national Health and Safety Codes of practice.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • State registration with Health Professions Council (HPC) or equivalent recognised organisation
  • MSc Biomedical Science or equivalent academic achievement ratified by the Institute of biomedical Science (IBMS) in blood transfusion, or equivalent qualification.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development and proficiency in accordance with HPC guidelines.
  • Post registration specialty training in accordance with Institute of Biomedical Scienceguidelines.
  • Manual dexterity to undertake highly specialised techniques.
  • Effective and accurate keyboard and mouse skills.
  • Effective communication skills both written and oral.
  • Effective interpersonal and motivational skills.
  • Effective logical thought processes and the ability to solve problems and plan remedial action.
  • Effective organisational, planning and time management skills.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development at HPC registration level.
  • Substantial post HPC registration experience in a specific discipline.
