 A  self motivated qualified Cytoscreener, preferably with experience of reporting SurePath LBC samples is needed. However, conversion training can be provided on site for those with ThinPrep LBC experience. Post-holder will undertake the following duties:

Main Duties:

  • Primary screening of gynaecological cytology smears, to identify potentially abnormal cases, which require further review. Thereafter, make a considered judgement in order to suggest an appropriate cytological result grade, in line with NHSCSP reporting practice.
  • Participate in internal quality control schemes, e.g. rapid review.
  • Reporting of “negative” gynaecological cytology smears as appropriate. Decision making to include management recommendations for future smear interval, dependent upon clinical details, previous history and/or treatment, in line with NHSCSP reporting practice.
  • Duplicate screening of gynaecological cytology smears, as required, e.g. as a mentor for trainees/other colleagues as appropriate
  • Participate in internal/external quality assurance programmes.
  • Attend multi-header feedback/training sessions for interesting cases
  • Assist in identification and compilation of cases for use in laboratory slide library/BCTC teaching material.
  • Provide assistance in research and teaching aspects of department.
  • Attend Clinico-Pathology Meetings, as appropriate.
  • Attend in-house Journal Club meetings.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Minimum of 4 ‘O’ levels/GCSE passes or equivalent.
  • City and Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Cervical Cytology or NHSCSP Certificate in Cervical Cytology or equivalent.
  • Evidence of Cervical Cytology EQA scheme participation.
  • Evidence of meeting NHSCSP standards for Cervical Screening.
  • Willing & able to undertake minimum continual mandatory training requirements
  • SurePath LBC qualified or willing to undertake ThinPrep to SurePath conversion.
  • Current continuous experience of Cervical Cytology Screening and Reporting.
  • Experience of reporting SurePath cervical cytology samples would be an advantage, however conversion training for ThinPrep experienced screeners will be provided.
  • Experienced in the use of laboratory computer software.
  • Excellent oral and written communications (accuracy & high level of written English essential).
  • Ability to plan, organise time and resources and assess priorities.
  • Proven ability to work independently and self motivate.
  • Proven ability to work as part of a team.
  • Capacity and willingness to work to tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work with people at all levels and professional groups.
  • Regular daily attendance Monday to Friday.
  • Flexible working to meet the needs of the service as required e.g. start and finish times may change dependant upon service requirements.
  • Use of Computer system essential in job role.
  • Colour vision requires assessment to ensure provision of appropriate equipment.
